Tips on Getting a Great Haircut for Guys

Most people associate beauty salons and hair styling with women, but for men getting a hair cut can be a great way to improve your look...and maybe your luck. Finding the right hairstyle is more than just showing up to your barber or stylist and asking "for a trim." Getting a great haircut means collaborating with your stylist and discussing the various aspects of your hair and lifestyle.

If you haven't found a hairstylist that fits your needs you're going to want to go out for a consultation at a few different locales. Try the upscale trendy boutique across town and then check out the corner barber shop. Each locale will give you different options and present you with different ideas for your haircut. Don't be shy about telling them what you're looking for and bring pictures of styles that inspire you. More and more stylists report having men bring in photos of what they're looking for, you may see something in a magazine or on the computer that looks good to you so bring that picture in. Give the stylist an idea of how you prepare your hair. Do you find a blow dryer as useful as sunglasses at night or do you actually know how to use one? Do you gel or prefer au naturale? What's your job like? If you're selling insurance, best guess is that you're probably not going to opt for the dyed blue faux-hawk. Engage your stylist and come up with a plan that works for the both of you. If he or she can't give you the haircut you're looking for, don't be afraid to try another place.

Another big question that guys have is what to do about the tip. How much do you owe the stylist and should you even give the person who washed your hair the time of day? The answer is about 20% for the stylist (assuming he or she has done a good job) and about $5 for the hair-washer. If you're planning on coming back to the same salon again and again you're not going to want the reputation of a cheapskate, especially with all those sharp scissors and razors being waved around your face.

So, start checking for new ideas about your new haircut. A change to your look can sometimes seem unsettling but can really give you that boost of confidence in the long run. You may have to change your stylist or you may want to stick with what's been working for you but don't fret; if you think you've made a mistake with your cut just remember that the best thing about a bad haircut is that it gets better every day.
